Materials & technology

Not plastic as a commodity: films, nonwovens and laminates, specified.

Felix works with nonwovens, films and laminates, combining them into barrier, absorbent and elastic structures for specific applications.

01

Nonwovens

Spunbond, SMS / SMMS and meltblown webs, all in polypropylene, plus elastic nonwovens. They form the face, core and reinforcement of Felix's laminates and are sold as materials in their own right.

Spunbond weight
12–150 g/m², up to 1.6 m wide
SMS / SMMS weight
10–70 g/m²
SMS / SMMS width
160 cm (63 in)
Filament fineness
1–4 denier per filament
Finishes
Hydrophilic · UV · flame-retardant · anti-static · antibacterial · coloured

02

Films

Cast films, gravure-embossed on a chill roll, as breathable (nano-porous) or non-breathable (monolithic) structures, plus polypropylene, filled-polyolefin and agricultural films.

Film weight
14–50 g/m²
Breathable WVTR
500–9,500 g/m²/24 h (ASTM E96-2000, desiccant)
Water-column resistance
From 100 cm H₂O
Non-breathable raw material
100 % polyethylene

03

Laminates

Nonwoven bonded to film by hot melt lamination, in double- and triple-layer constructions, breathable or non-breathable. This is where barrier, softness and breathability are set.

Technology
Hot melt lamination
Hygiene
27–300 g/m²
Medical
40–110 g/m² breathable · 40–200 g/m² non-breathable
Industrial
100–200 g/m²

04

Barrier materials

Gown fabrics to AAMI Level 3 and 4 and EN 13795, microporous laminates, and building membranes. Liquid and blood stay out while vapour passes.

Gown standards
EN 13795 High Performance · AAMI Level 3 / 4
Test methods
ASTM F1670 · ASTM F1671
MVTR
Above 4,000 g/m²/24 h on SFS65

05

Elastics

Elastic ear and waistband nonwovens, fully elastic two-way nonwoven and elastic bandages.

Fully elastic nonwoven weight
50–110 g/m²
Thickness
0.5–1.0 mm
Recovery
Machine and cross direction

06

Absorbent structures

Hydrophilic nonwovens laminated to barrier film, so liquid is held in the absorbent layer and the film stops leakage. Used in operating-room floor pads, table covers and drapes, and in sorbents.

Laminate weight
60–300 g/m²
Absorbency
Up to 800 %
Walking pad capacity
1.5 / 2 / 3 litres
Table cover capacity
Up to 2.4 litres
